KABUL—A car bomb in the southern Afghanistan city of Kandahar killed and wounded a large number of people, police said on Tuesday, with witnesses reporting heavy gunfire after the blast.

"There was a car bomb outside a residential house, there are many dead and wounded," said Pashtun Momand, a police officer in Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban.

A Kandahar resident who asked not to be identified said gunfire erupted after the blast, which blew out many windows in the city.
