With last year’s wonderfully eccentric debut
Limbo Panto Wild Beasts marked themselves out as true originals. This second release announces them as one of Britain’s best bands. Lyrically far more interesting than most of their counterparts, they conjure music possessing a timeless quality. ‘All the King’s Men’ is a paean to “the girls of Roedean and the girls of Shipley” and ‘Hooting and Howling’ is a tale of “brutes hoping to have a hoot”. Everything is couched in a kind of sepia tinted brutishness, but in its focus on sex it is wholly contemporary, with album standout ‘This is Our Lot’ being most overt in its eroticism. Spiffing and splendid.
