NEW YORK—Residents near Riverside Park on the Upper West Side woke up on Wednesday to discover the park trail covered with trees and branches split by last night’s thunder and lightning storm.

The park was blocked by security tape as city workers tried to remove the damage. Joggers and residents looked on in amazement at the storm's aftermath. Many were shocked to see the large number of trees that had fallen.

One Riverside resident who was out walking her dog couldn’t believe the damage.

“Last night was pretty bad, it was just cracking ... It’s a lot of beautiful trees, it’s very sad.” She said that her dog’s favorite tree was gone.

Jill, a worker from the parks department, was on the scene near 103rd Street. She said that the storm was a microburst, an intense column of sinking air which causes strong divergent winds.

She said that last year there was a similar storm a few blocks away on 96th street.

James Morgan, a porter, was out on the street during the storm. “I’ve never seen anything like that before up here, I was scared,” he said.

Another local, Robin McMahon, said he heard it from a distance in his apartment.

“It sounded like a home theater and it kept getting closer and closer. The trees were swinging.”

At least one car was hit by a tree resulting in a completely smashed back window and and a cracked front windshield. A local worker said the person inside the car was fine but the car was extremely damaged.
