BERLIN—Jamaican Usain Bolt, who smashed the 100 meters world record on Sunday, returns to action in the 200 heats at the world championships on Tuesday and while no medal is at stake yet his presence alone will be a highlight.

The 100 meters runner-up, American Tyson Gay, will not defend his world title over 200 , though, having pulled out with a groin injury.

American Sanya Richards and Britain's world and Olympic champion Christine Ohuruogu will battle it out in the women's 400 meters final while Americans Jeremy Wariner and LaShawn Merritt renew their rivalry in the heats of the men's 400.

In the 400 meters hurdles, Americans Kerron Clement and Bershawn Jackson are likely to fight for top spot.

Kenya will look to dominate the men's 3,000 steeplechase with Ezekiel Kemboi the only man in the field to have cracked eight minutes this season.

Medals are also up for grabs in the men's triple jump and women's javelin.
