27-year-old Zhang Yulian of Lin County, Shanxi Province, was sent to the Lin Count People’s Hospital for childbirth on June 30, and died three hours after arriving.
According to her husband, 32-year-old Hou Huanping, Zhang was healthy and illness-free before childbirth.
Hou said his wife started vomiting after taking a blood-pressure-lowering drug for medical treatment, given to her by Jiang Gailin, a doctor in charge of her case.
The doctor later decided to perform a caesarean operation. She and the baby died during the operation, however. Her body turned purple with blood filled her mouth.
The family demanded the hospital investigate Zhang’s death, alleging that the mother and baby died due to improper drug use on the part of the doctor.
Hou told an Epoch Times reporter by telephone that the director of the hospital admitted their responsibility for the deaths and promised to pay the family compensation up to 200, 000 yuan (US$29,280).
Hou said, “They attempted to resolve the issue in private to escape being investigated for the cause of the death, because they do not want to take medical responsibility.”
The family has not received the promised compensation so far.
According to World Health Organization, Maternal deaths during pregnancy or childbirth are very rare.
