Chinese police announced the arrest of 319 people suspected to have been involved in the July 5 protest in Urumuqi, the capital of China’s northwestern Xinjiang Province. They were arrested in Urumuqi and other locations across Xinjiang Province, the police said in the official statement announced on CCTV (China Central Television), August 2
A previous police statement of July 29 reported the arrests of 253 other suspects. Earlier reports indicated that over 1,000 were arrested on July 6, the day after the protest took place. Other sources revealed that the total arrests exceeded 2,000, while the exiled Uighur leader Rebiya Kadeer said up to 10,000 have gone missing since the crackdown. Beijing has not responded to the allegation.
Police did not disclose whether any arrestees have been released.
Urumuqi authorities and police said that more arrests will be made, and that police will not stop until all suspects involved in the protest are “behind bars.”
Internet and telecommunication services, such as online banking, the weather report, and SMS, have been reopened after a complete shutdown since the protest. Authorities promised to restore more services, but said the progress will depend on the situation on the ground.
