WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y.—A former student of modern and ballroom dance admired the detail and discipline of the Chinese classical dance performers in Shen Yun Performing Arts who returned to the State University of New York Performing Arts Center, Purchase College, on Sunday Aug. 2.

Ms. Asher, who is now a director of a preschool, used her dancing experience to appreciate some of the finer details of the show. She also kept in mind her new profession and what her four-year-old daughter might make of the display of history and culture being displayed on the stage.

“I love it,” she said, “it’s beautiful, and actually very calming and soothing. I appreciate the dance. I would love to come back with my daughter. She takes ballet and tap, and she would absolutely love it.

“The color, the costumes, all the different props they are using, the drums, the chopsticks, the fans,” Ms. Asher said. “She would absolutely love the way they use their dresses. And the one piece with the mother and the father and the daughter, that would touch her. She would appreciate that and be sensitive and concerned.”

Ms. Asher was referring to the piece Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution which is about an innocent family in China whose father is persecuted to death for practising Falun Dafa, a traditional spiritual discipline. “It is a story of lives in China we seldom hear about,” the program notes say.

What stood out for Ms. Asher was that the performers made it look so effortless. “[It was] different and detailed. I am definitely looking at all of their footwork. [It is] very disciplined—like they didn’t put a lot of work into it, although I know that they did.” She knew that “it took many hours of study and hard training. It’s just that they are making it look like it’s easy, but I know it’s not because I studied dance.”

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts will be performing two shows in Birmingham, Ala., on August 21 and 22 at the Concert Hall, Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. Then a five-run show will be held at Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center Opera House from August 26 to 30.
