WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y.—Performing to a full house, audience members stood in applause for Shen Yun Divine Performing Arts following their performance in Purchase, New York on Aug. 2.
The show of classical Chinese dance and culture has captivated audiences worldwide for the past several years, and regularly performs to sold out shows at the world's top theaters.
"I think it's very interesting," said business owner Ms. Bonura, who attended the Aug. 2 show at The Performing Arts Center at SUNY Purchase College.
She added that the integration of dance into stories of Chinese legends and values was enjoyable. "It's really good because you get to appreciate dance like this, because it's a form of interpretation and acting," Ms. Bonura said.
Shen Yun has set out to restore the traditional dance heritage of ancient China—one that stretches through 5,000 years of culture. The unique dance style includes an array of movements, ranging from gentle movements to flips, high-flying tumbles, and diverse spins.
According to Shen Yun's Web site, traditional Chinese culture is at the heart of the expressive range offered by the dance form. "The dancer is thus capable of not only portraying a given figure’s disposition or mood, but even the vivid expressions unique to a certain age, whatever the land or time," says the Shen Yun Web site.
Ms. Bonura shared the same impression. "I think they're very good ... because you understand without them talking about what they're doing," she said. "They interpret a dance that tells a story, and I think it's done very well."
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts will be performing two shows in Birmingham, Ala., on Aug. 21 and 22, at the Concert Hall, Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. Then a five-run show will be held at Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center Opera House from Aug. 26 to 30.
