On July 28, one thousand workers from Wuhan Boiler Company Ltd. (WBC) blocked the main street of Wuhan City in central China to protect their job security.

According to a Radio Free Asia report, on the morning of July 28, more than one thousand workers of the Wuhan Boiler Company started blocking the Wuluo Road, the major road in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province.

The protesters, holding banners reading ‘Against Human Rights Violations’, ‘Human Rights’, ‘Fight for Survival’ and ‘Protect Our Families’, stood en masse on the road, blocking traffic both ways for three hours.

Hundreds of police were sent to the protest scene by local authorities to maintain order.

It is reported that the workers blocked the roads because the WBC sold some of the company’s buildings to a developer, which would result in the plant closing, and over a thousand workers losing their jobs as well as their retirement and medical care plans.

This is the third protest by WBC Workers since July 10, 2009.

Built in 1954, the company was listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in 1998 with registered capital of 297 million yuan.
