The local residents are in a panic; subsequently they followed the officials and fled to neighboring towns. The officials are taking all measures to deny such a “rumor” and claim they arrested five so-called rumormongers.
The Liming Irradiation Plant uses 60Co irradiation to preserve garlic and chili powders. On June 7, produce jammed ahead of the protective cowling and radioactive emissions were irradiating the air.
Local people revealed the news on line and indicated that the 60Co directly set goods on fire and several people in the area were killed by the fire.
The Qixian regime blocked the news until July 12. The news release stressed that “there will be no (safety) problem within three months.”
However, several days ago the Qixian Party Committee Organization Department organized transportation to other cities for families of committee members. On July 17, the director of the Qixian Administration of Taxation was reported to have taken his entire family to nearly Zhengzhou City. The locals immediately reacted to the news and fled from their homes by all possible means, cars, tricycles, tractors, buses and so forth. The main roads to neighboring towns are seriously congested.
A local, Mr. Wong told NTDTV, “People are panicking because of the subtle message.”
He said, “The Qixian people are spread all over the place now. They are flooding into the neighboring towns.”
Local officials were stationed at the main roads to block the fleeing crowds. It is estimated that at least 800,000 people within a 50 km radius of Qixian are fleeing. Bus fares to neighboring towns such as Kaifeng and Zhengzhou have doubled from 5 yuan to 10 yuan and some are as high as 500 yuan. The majority of local businesses have closed and the streets are vacant in Qixian.
Vice governor of Henan, Qing Yubai, and Kaifeng Party Secretary, Liu Changchun, both rushed to Qixian on July 18 to administer the local situation. The local regime and experts repeatedly stress on TV that there is no radiation leakage, claiming that it was a rumor spread by people not knowledgeable of the facts, and called on people to return home.
Major forums and blogs are blocked. Some Chinese bloggers criticized the regime’s credibility saying, “If the government clearly indicates that there is no leakage, it is highly likely that there are leaks.”
