CORDOBA, Argentina—A former prima ballerina and ballet director ranked Shen Yun 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. Ms. Lertora now has an acting career. She saw Shen Yun on July 17. She found the performance "Magnificent!. To me it is a show of great delicacy, precision and broadness that those young people bring forth, with so much dynamics and such a drive to get the best out of themselves. It really is admirable."
The Argentinian dancer found a new way of looking at Chinese people from the performance. Most of the artists in the company are ethnically Chinese, though many were born in the West. The company is based in New York. Ms. Lertora described her new perception as, "They are a lot more passionate than we Latinos would believe. Or let's put it this way, we always have the idea that a Chinese is a person, how to say, it´s not 'cold,' but very secretive, very much directed inwards. But here it seems they are showing the best of themselves. I have to repeat, the beauty of the costumes, the splendor, the broadness of the movements. They have a musical ear for the rhythm, because they are very rhythmical fundamentally, fundamentally, and for sure they are of great musicality."
The accomplished dancer trained in Western ballet, and felt she did not know the depths of Chinese dance. She could tell the Shen Yun company members "must have had very profound training of its origins, of the movements. We in classical ballet have the Russian school, undoubtedly known all over the world, but this for us is a beauty and novelty that cannot be appreciated enough." Many company members have studied art and music since childhood. They are internationally distinguished artists.
The audience appreciated it enormously. They broke into applause again and again, and gave three curtain calls at the end. People lingered in the theater for many minutes after the final curtain, still in their seats, talking about what thy had seen and heard.
Ms. Lertora said she would see it again if she had the chance. She admired the dancers. "Although they are so young, or they seem to me to be very young, but I believe they are people with a lot of experience."
She enjoyed the "beauty, the colorfulness, the esthetics they provide, and, for sure, the balance of the forms with the theatrical and swaying images."
