The Greek meaning of the word Anathallo is “to renew, refresh, or bloom again” and that is exactly what this Chicago based ensemble do here on an album of stunning pastoral indie pop. A rhapsody of soaring harmonies, asymmetrical rhythms, and multi-instrumental textures melt over you in waves. The complex songs’ frequent, unexpected changes in direction are reminiscent of the ceaselessly inventive XTC at their best, while Anathallo also seem inspired by the same type of alternative vision as another Chicago leading light, Andrew Bird. An otherworldly and mesmerising sonic landscape.
