A nearly completed 13-story apartment building on the outskirts of Shanghai toppled onto its side at around 6 a.m. on June 27, killing one worker. The building remained nearly intact.
Xinmin Net said a construction worker had gone into the building to get his tools before the accident happened. He was trapped in the building and was pulled out dead.
The building, the first of three buildings on the property, was planned to be occupied in May 2010. Some of the units had already been sold. The construction of other buildings on the property has been terminated.
The owners were outraged and demanded a refund of their deposit. Residents in the neighbourhood also expressed concerns over the impact on the foundations of the neighboring buildings.
The developer, Shanghai Meidu Real Estate, could not be reached for comment. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
