Mr. Fu Ziming's death by crayon was not a result of toxins from poor manufacturing of crayons but rather because what he was writing is considered poison by the Chinese communist regime. On April 17, while visiting the Mt. Wuyi area, Fu wrote in crayon on a rock "Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is good; Falun Dafa is good."
Fu Ziming died in custody April 19, only two days after being detained by local authorities near a popular tourist site in southeast China. His family members have reportedly been arrested as well, and their whereabouts are unknown.
Security forces in China’s Fujian and Hubei provinces are being accused of a cover-up over this recent death.
“Mr. Fu’s case is a startling reminder of the life threatening danger Falun Gong practitioners face as soon as they are arrested,” said Gail Raichlin, spokesperson for the Falun Dafa Information Center, a New York-based organization that documents the rights violations of adherents of Falun Gong (also known as Falun Dafa).
Mr. Fu was visiting the Wuyi Mountain Scenic Area, a popular tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site, on a field trip with fellow postal workers from his hometown of Jianli County in Hubei province.
While visiting the site, security cameras reportedly captured Mr. Fu writing with a crayon “Falun Dafa is good; Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance is Good” on a nearby rock. This grassroots gesture is often done by adherents of the practice (sometimes displayed on homemade banners and posters), as a way of countering the Chinese communist regime dominant control over media and dissemination of information concerning Falun Gong.
That evening, sources say Mr. Fu was taken from his hotel by agents of the local police station, operating under guidance from the Wuyi Police Department. Two days later he died, reportedly from torture sustained during his incarceration.
“What kind of regime arrests and kills a man for writing that Truth, Compassion, and Forbearance are good,” questions Ms. Rachlin. “It is horrific that such a peaceful act of free expression and belief has cost an innocent man his life.”
Local authorities have denied the death, and one report states that Mr. Fu died from a “train accident.” A staff member at the police station in Jianli admitted briefly that Fu’s corpse was in police custody, but hung up when pressed for further details by a reporter.
Authorities have also reportedly pressured colleagues that traveled with Mr. Fu to remain silent about the circumstances surrounding his death.
"We don't know where his corpse is,” a co-worker told The Epoch Times. “However, it's impossible that it will be transported back here. It has been cremated out somewhere. My heart feels very bad [about Fu’s death].”
Falun Gong is a traditional-style Buddhist qigong practice, with roots in the Chinese heritage of cultivating the mind and body for health and spiritual growth. Once openly practiced in China, it was banned by the Chinese communist regime in 1999.
