Walter Ma, vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Fashion Design Association and 1997 award winner, praised NTDTV’s Han Couture (fashion) Design Competition as a very meaningful competition. He encouraged the fashion world to actively participate.

Ma has been a judge in many fashion design competitions and beauty pageant shows, but he said the NTDTV’s competition was a whole new experience.

“This is a very meaningful event because it will motivate fashion lovers to study Chinese traditional styles,” he said.  “In Chinese history, each dynasty brought its unique styles. For fashion designers who are willing to explore, this is a rich mine of inspiration.”

As a native to Hong Kong, Ma admits that he always had a passion for Chinese culture.  His works are imprinted with Chinese traditional spirit presented with classic elements such as pearls and embroidery. “After all it’s Chinese blood that runs in my veins,” he said.

Of all the dynasties, Ma’s favorite is the Tang Dynasty, the most glorious period in Chinese history. He admired the extraordinary weaving and dying techniques of Tang that shaped the apparel culture in ages.

Ma encouraged participants to seek out knowledge and at the same time explore their own path for creativity. “Chinese people are rooted in this culture,” he said. “Don’t step away from it. I hope one day we can find the perfect balance between Chinese traditional style and wearability.”

Currently the vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Fashion Design Association, Ma has been striving to improve the image and status of Hong Kong apparel in the international fashion industry. He is also an active participant in the Hong Kong Trade Development Council along with being an active participant in many fashion shows in China and Korea.
