The Anaheim Ducks evened their series with the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings on Sunday by winning a marathon triple-overtime battle 4–3 courtesy of a Todd Marchant goal.
Marchant fired a wrist shot into the top corner far side past Chris Osgood after 101 minutes and 15 seconds of play.
The 101 minutes and 15 seconds of play marks the longest game thus far in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger led all players with 46:21 of ice time.
The battle between the teams that have won the past two Stanley Cups will head west to Anaheim for Game 3 on Tuesday night.
The Ducks have accomplished their goal of gaining a split in Hockeytown. They have home-ice advantage in what is now a best-of-five series.
Ryan Getzlaf continued to lead the Ducks offensively with a goal and two assists. His line, with Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan, is carrying the scoring load for Anaheim racking up nine points in the first two games.
Detroit started to gain the upper hand in the third period and overtimes, outshooting the Ducks 44–24 but it only took one shot to end it, and Marchant came through for the Ducks.
