SYDNEY, Australia—Audience members gave the Shen Yun Performing Arts 2009 World Tour glowing reviews as the company winds up its classical Chinese dance performances at NIDA’s Parade Theatre in Kensington Sydney on Sunday, April 26.
After the Sunday matinee, James, the head of a solicitor firm, said he found the performances “very, very stimulating.”
”The exhibition this afternoon is a wonderful rendition of classical Chinese culture. I’m very happy that your organisation is doing what you can to reinvigorate this culture which almost disappeared as a result of the Cultural Revolution,” he said.
Several of the performances depict ancient stories that place emphasis on virtues such as loyalty and familial piety. One of them is Mulan Joins the Battle.
“I liked the Mulan who went and fought in place of her father, showing genuine respect for her parents,” he said.
“I think that is one of the finest things of Chinese traditional culture is respect for elders, and it’s something here in the West we have lost, probably because in the West we’ve lost many of our traditional values."
James’s godson Jayden said he found the show “mind-blowing.
“The show is ... absolutely fantastic. There are all these bright colours, and the dancing is just so graceful. The singing is just so touching. It just touches my heart all the time.”
James said it was wonderful that the dance company, based in New York, could present classical Chinese culture in Australia.
“So many Chinese would appreciate it, and I think it’s wonderful that people who aren’t of Chinese extraction learn to appreciate it as well.”
Visiting over 80 cities across Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia, Shen Yun’s final Australian performance for the 2009 World Tour is being held at the Parade Theatre tonight.
