LIMA—Venezuela's top opposition leader Manuel Rosales has arrived in Peru to escape corruption charges he says are a politically motivated punishment for his criticism of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia on Tuesday told CNN the former presidential candidate and fierce critic had arrived in Peru on a tourist visa.

Rosales' party said on Monday that Rosales was seeking foreign asylum because he did not believe he would receive a fair trial in Venezuela.

Garcia said the former presidential candidate and current mayor of Venezuela's second city Maracaibo had not yet asked for asylum in Peru.

Rosales had gone into hiding in Venezuela and refused to turn himself in when corruption charges were filed against him.
