Previously held in Toronto and Montreal, as many as 1,000 actors, directors, producers, and others in the biz, attended the ceremonies. Canadian celebrities were interviewed on the Red Carpet leading to the private cocktail reception honouring Canadian films.
Comedian Dave Foley, best known as one of the Kids in the Hall, hosted the event. Other Canadian celebrities seen on the Red Carpet included actress and filmmaker Sarah Polley, actor Gordon Pinsent, George Stroumboulopoulos (host of CBC’s The Hour), Sara Morton (CEO of Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television), and chair of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television Ron Cohen of Ottawa. Of course it wouldn’t be Ottawa if some politicians weren’t chatting and posing for photos with the celebs before the show. Attendees included Ottawa MP Paul Dewar and wife Julia Sneyd, Toronto MP Martha Hall Findlay, Liberal Heritage critic Pablo Rodriguez, MPP Jim Watson with guest Blair Dickerson, Alberta Culture Minister Lindsay Blackett, MPP Madeleine Meilleur, and Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien – sporting a silver tie matched to his wife Colleen's amazing silver gown by Elena's Creations.
"The Genie's were a wonderful addition to Ottawa and they would be welcome back to the Nation's Capital at any time," said Mayor O'Brien.
