North Carolina raced out to a 31-11 lead before the game was 10 minutes old, and held the lead the rest of the way to win the NCAA men's basketball championship Monday night.

The final score was 89-72.

Michigan State attempted to use the strategy that had gained it upset wins against two other bracket #1 seeds, Louisville and Connecticut, but could not execute well enough. They pushed the ball up the court and substituted freely in order to wear out their opponents, but too many turnovers and errant shots sealed their fate against North Carolina.

MSU kept it from being a blowout as they put the pressure on UNC, getting the lead down to as little as 13 in the second half. But the talented team of Roy Williams held on and ended an entertaining NCAA season on top, after several teams took turns in the #1 position.
