Two thousand years ago during the Han Dynasty ago Han Xin was a renowned general and was credited to have positively influenced the establishment of Emperor Liu Bang's dynasty. Ever since, Chinese people to this day praise his accomplishments and his ability to demonstrate humility.
Han Xin's sword skills were amazing, even during his younger years. Carrying the sword at his side one day he encountered a group of thugs. One of them yelled, "Say, you look like a coward. Why do you carry a sword?"
Han Xin did not want to reply and simply wanted to walk on. That enraged the scoundrel even more. "If you are not afraid to kill me, lift your sword against me. But if you are too timid, then crawl between my legs!"
A gathering crowd watched in fascination and eager to wait what would happen next. The scoundrel placed himself squarely before Han Xin who let go of the sword's hilt, went to his knees and crawled between the ruffian's legs. The bystanders laughed at what they saw as Han Xin's cowardice.
Han Xin eventually became a leading general during Emperor Liu Bang's reign. His forgiveness and ability to endure humbly while young were later seen as virtues. These characteristics laid the groundwork for his later accomplishments.
