Almost every weekend, Vienna hosts concerts and operas in different venues across the city. The weekend of March 14–15 is no exception. Several concerts and operas are already scheduled. These performances include The Vienna Walzer Orchestra, The Mozart Ensemble, and the opera Falstaff.
The Vienna Walzer Orchestra performs regularly at Palffy Palace, a beautiful post-Renaissance concert hall that is an elegant example of Classical period culture. The concerts will feature works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss II, such as songs, ballets, polkas, and yes—waltzes.
Strauss favorites will include such pieces as “The Bat,” “The Beautiful Blue Danube,” and “The Radetzky March.” The orchestra also features well-known singers and ballet dancers who share a common desire to perform these pieces as perfectly as possible and recreate the 18th century atmosphere.
The Mozart Ensemble is also performing on the night of March 15 and is sure take the viewer back in time to 18th century Vienna. The venue of the ensemble is the Mozart House, one of the oldest concert halls in Vienna. Mozart actually lived in this house in the spring of 1781. The Sala Terrena room of the house, where the ensemble performs its concerts, is beautifully decorated with paintings, adding to the Classical environment. The acoustics of the Sala Terrena are well respected in Vienna and were appreciated by Mozart as well.
The Mozart Ensemble strives to perform in Viennese Classical period style, and features works that include the greatest pieces of Haydn, Schubert, and of course, Mozart. The ensemble consists of four classically trained musicians who also double as soloists.
The Vienna State Opera consists of both an opera house and company. The musicians in the company are highly accomplished classically trained musicians who are frequently recruited for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Elsewhere on the 15th, the Vienna State Opera house will produce “Falstaff,” featuring among other opera luminaries, the gorgeous soprano Angela Gheorghiu. “Falstaff” is a classic opera comedy by Giuseppe Verdi based on Shakespeare’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor” and “Henry IV.” This last opera of Verdi and was first performed in the late 19th century.
Whether one prefers operas or concerts or a stimulating waltz, Vienna offers some of the best music in the Western Hemisphere.
