It sounds like the Democracy Prep Charter School hosted quite a blowout for the Inauguration of the 44th President, Barack Obama. (“Huge Inauguration Celebration for Harlem Schools,” Jan. 21). The fact that the event drew 3,500 students from 20 schools as well as assorted community dignitaries speaks volumes as to what a fixture this charter school devoted to civic education is becoming.

Considerable controversy exists as to over-the-top rooting for Obama within the education world, but it is easy to understand the joy that was expressed in Harlem when an African-American took the presidential oath of office for the first time.

One just hopes that when the students settle back into the study of civics they will come to appreciate that all Inaugurations are historic because they ratify the will of the people and signify the peaceful transition of power. It is to be hoped they will learn to appreciate that ours is a system of laws, not pop-idol stars, and they will use their powers of critical thinking to analyze the actions of the new President, just as they would any other administration’s.
