SAN FRANCISCO—Artist Ms. Spirit Saint Joan found a piece of heaven at the Divine Performing Arts [DPA] Chinese New Year Spectacular showcasing at the War Memorial Opera House from Jan. 7–11.

Ms. Joan, a veteran viewer, explained, “I saw it in Las Vegas last year, and my friends and I saw it this year too, but it isn’t showing in Vegas this year, so we came here to watch it instead.” Asked if she had seen the show twice, she said, “No, more. It costs us more than $200 for airfare. We came and saw as many shows as we could, yesterday and today. I met other people that were here two times in one day. They watched the show, told people about the show, and then came back to watch it again.”

She particularly favored a dance “where the girls come out with huge ribbons and steam-like clouds [Flowing Sleeves]. It was as if they were in heaven. Looking at the divine beings was beautiful.

“I don’t really understand [Chinese dance], but I realize it is so pure, and it doesn’t show anywhere but here [this year]. I’m from Las Vegas, and the shows there are very different from this performance. The ones in Las Vegas are very flashy with heavy makeup and jewelry, but this show is pure and divine.”

Classical Chinese dance has at its core China’s divinely inspired culture and in the presentation digitally animated backdrops of majestic palaces, Buddhist temples, and cascading clouds enliven the story-based dances and songs.

Yesterday Ms. Joan sat in the top rows and could see the show from a different angle.

“When you’re at the top, you actually see the shape and form of the dancers, and they formed a dragon with their bodies. But down in the front rows, you can’t see that. You can only see the faces instead of the shapes that the dancers make.

“Yes, I like the fact that you feel like you’re watching heaven, it is very amazing. I had a feeling that heaven opened up, and all the performers were coming down from heaven.”
