A two square kilometre oil slick has been discovered about 55 kilometers off the coast of Jiaonan city's Lingshan Island, near Qingdao's Olympic sailing venue.

The slick is about 30 miles away from where the sailing is held and was found on August 11. Chinese regime officials say they think the oil came from a ship.

They said the oil will not affect the sailing races and they would make every effort to monitor and contain the spill.

Two weeks ago the Olympic sailing venue was so encrusted with bright green algae that the sea looked like a carpet of moss.

The sludge affected the training schedules of many national teams and Olympic officials had to bring in 240 Chinese fishing boats to scoop it up. More than 10,000 people, backed by boats, bulldozers and the military have been involved in the clean-up so far.

The boats have to go out each day before the racing starts and remove any excess algae. There have also been problems with excess seaweed being washed up on the beach because of storms.
