A youngster on his way home from kindergarten was crushed and killed beneath a dump truck in Sichuan Province on Thursday.

Five-year-old, Xiong Maoke, was walking with schoolmates when he was hit head-on at 11 a.m., reported Sichuan News online.

An eyewitness, Ms. Zhang, was walking behind the children at the time. “The truck headed right at them even though they were off the road!” she said. Zhang also recalled that the child had stood up to retrieve his umbrella after being hit the first time.

But what she saw next was shocking: “The truck backed away a bit and then went forward, rolling the child under a front wheel.”

The truck continued for several yards and then stopped in front of Zhang, who could see that young Xiong was bleeding.

“’What are you doing? Stop!’ I yelled. The truck halted and the driver exited, cursed, and walked away.”

The boy’s mother, Wei Wenling, was called to the scene and collapsed, sobbing and moaning. “Someone ran to call me. I rushed out only to see my son crushed under the wheels,” she said.

Ao Yang, the driver, 35, told reporters, “I will pay whatever the family asks me to pay.”

The tragedy occurred the day before another child, a 2-year-old girl named Yueyue, died from injuries received during hit-and-runs by two vehicles on Oct. 13 in Guangzhou. The accident was captured by a security camera and posted online. The video sparked much outrage among bloggers, as 18 people could be clearly seen to pass by the girl without stopping to help.

In the wake of the death of a second child, tens of thousands of comments have been posted, many expressing their anguish and grief.

“What is wrong with this society?” said one netizen, posted at comment5.news.

The news garnered more than 180,000 hits in the 24 hours after being posted to qq.com. “DreamDream,” one among many commenters, wrote: “Why are there so many inhuman people in the world? The sad tale of little Yueyue had not yet ended when another child is run over and killed!”

“Hingqipao” wrote: “Why are there so many people like this driver? How is this any different from murder?”

Another commenter called “King fighting for power” said: “This is the result of a society that worships money and power.”
