Chinese activist Feng Zhenghu announced on Feb. 2 that he had ended his protest at Japan’s Narita International Airport, the “glass cage” he has been in since November last year, after the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) announced that he would be allowed to return to China.

Mr. Feng entered Japan the next day and will stay at his sister’s home before heading back to Shanghai for the Chinese New Year on Feb. 14.

The Japanese government began negotiating with the CCP for the issue to be dealt with after his unique protest brought a host of attention from international media before Christmas last year. Individuals and organizations visited Mr. Feng at the airport, donated money, and brought him instant noodles and other daily needs. He kept in touch with his support base through Twitter, where he’d attracted a following of 14,000.

“I am very calm now because these are my rights,” he said to a Sound of Hope reporter. “I don’t think the Chinese government will create such a situation again; I hope there won’t be such a stupid thing in future as blocking a citizen from entering the country…once is enough,” he said.

Before Mr. Feng started his protest in Tokyo’s airport he had been denied entry into China eight times since last June due to his rights advocacy efforts.

Mr. Feng compared his three months in the airport to being confined in a glass cage. He slept on an airport bench, and got no fresh air or sunlight. “These days were abnormal,” he said. “Every day I could not get a good sleep. I never once took a bath all these 90 days. The atmosphere is stagnant. I can say that it’s tougher than jail,” he said. He is one to know, having been previously imprisoned in China on account of his activism.

As for the reason he persevered, and even succeeded in returning home, he was reflective: “I had expected that the result would come out like this. It was simply a matter of time. I deserve the rights of a Chinese citizen.”
