SYDNEY—Aboriginal rights campaigner Faith Bandler has been invested with the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), Australia's highest honour, by the Governor-General Quentin Bryce.
A beaming Bandler, who was instrumental in gaining citizenship for indigenous Australians in 1967, was embraced by Mrs Bryce as she received the award.
She was awarded the AC in the 2009 Australia Day Honours, for distinguished service to the community through the advancement of human rights and social justice.
Mrs Bandler was joined by family members at a small investiture ceremony at Admiralty House in Sydney on Wednesday.
Afterwards, she said the next struggle would be "complete equal rights for women in every way".
"I'd like to see the abolition of the differences that are created between different groups and there should be one people, one country, for all human beings working for each other," Mrs Bandler said.
