our contestants of New Tang Dynasty Television’s third Chinese International Violin Competition participated in a master class instructed by Lucie Robert at the Merkin Concert Hall, Kaufman Center in New York on Friday, Oct. 29.
The four earned the special class through their outstanding performance at the competition this week.
Lucie Robert, a native of Canada's Quebec province is a highly accomplished violinist and an experienced instructor. She received the first prize at the Canadian Music Festival and Joseph Joachim International Competition and has made solo appearances with a list of orchestras. She teaches at Mannes College the New School for Music and Manhattan School of Music in New York.
In the class, Robert summarized the characteristics of each contestant’s performance, and guided them individually.
Robert praised finalist Corin Lee, a student of the Julliard School, for his technical skills and cleanness in sound. She encouraged him to impart more liveliness to the music. He performed No.19 of Paganini’s caprices.
Another finalist, Du Xuan, played No. 8 of Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas in G major. Robert told Du that Beethoven’s music contains explosive emotions and dramatic changes in moods. She then conducted for him to explain the ups and downs in volume.
The final round of the competition will be held at the Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Center on Sunday, Oct. 31, followed by an awards ceremony.
