NEW YORK—For watch company president Roberto Cristobal, the dancing of Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company went well beyond the superficial, presenting a deep spiritual message. He saw Shen Yun at Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater on June 23, at the first performance of a five-show run.
Mr. Cristobal, who brought his son to the first Shen Yun performance at the Lincoln Center in New York City, is the president of Delaneau NA, a Swiss watch company.
“It was interesting. It was very different from anything else I’ve seen before,” he said. “It shows a kind of dance … It’s very different from the dancing I’ve seen before, in any other classical or modern dance.”
Shen Yun seeks to revive the age-old traditional Chinese culture that was all but destroyed during the 60-plus years of communist rule in China. It uses classical Chinese dance as a core medium of expression.
According to Shen Yun’s program book, “classical Chinese dance is best able to bring to life the richness and depth of an ancient culture.”
Mr. Cristobal noted that the performances in Shen Yun are “very energetic with a lot of color.”
He found the dance, Udumbara’s Bloom, to be particularly moving. In Buddhist tradition, there is a flower called the Udumbara that blooms once every three thousand years. The dance depicts its rare bloom.
“I was really touched by that. I feel that the message is a little bit more than the superficial dancing that you would see,” he said. “The intrinsic message behind that is very interesting. And I like that kind of relationship.”
Overall, he said there are messages contained within the Shen Yun performance, ones "that you have to think about."
"[The performances] are a little bit more profound than the regular kinds of events," he added.Reporting by Pamela Tsai and Jack Phillips
