NEW YORK—Gracing the stage at Lincoln Center’s David Koch theater on Saturday evening, Shen Yun Performing Arts impressed a business owner and his wife with its talented dancers, digital backdrops, vibrant colors, and live orchestra.

The backdrops “seemed like paradise,” said Mr. Solomon, owner of a plumbing business. “It was a feast for the eyes.”

Shen Yun is a performing arts company based in New York which travels the world imparting 5,000 years of traditional Chinese performing arts through a masterful set of pieces featuring ethnic, story-based, and classical Chinese dance.

“The dancing was like I’ve never seen before, I mean the leaping, the gracefulness of the dancers, the way they were uniform together….I wish this came on TV, I wish more people could know how beautiful Chinese culture really is,” said Venise, Mr. Solomon’s wife. She wasn’t aware that techniques like tumbling and acrobatics actually originate from classical Chinese dance.

The story-based dances tell of different legends from throughout China’s rich history, while the ethnic dances display each ethnicity’s unique style and props. One piece, depicting ethnic Tibetan dancers on Tibetan steppes, wear items like sturdy boots, long-sleeved shirts, and colorful prayer beads.

Venise appreciated the underlying story of China’s culture, from its beginning to the present. “It gave me insight into the beliefs of Chinese people, and it helped me appreciate that there is a depth, a truth, and looking for hope,” she said. She also appreciated the principles of goodness being emphasized, since that’s rare in performances.

Overall, they really enjoyed the performance.

“Visually, it was just incredible,” said Mr. Solomon. “It was absolutely incredible. The music was beautiful, the women were just graceful, the men were powerful,” added Venise. “One of the best show I’ve ever seen.”
