WESTCHESTER,N.Y.—Shen Yun Performing Arts received standing ovations and a warm reception from the crowd, as the curtains closed at The Performing Arts Center at SUNY, Purchase College.
“I love it. It’s unbelievable; the dance, the backdrops, the performance. It’s just awesome,” said Gilbert Baeriswil, the general manager of Castle on the Hudson.
“It’s just unbelievable,” he added.
The Aug. 22 performance of music and classical Chinese dance is the first of two to be held in Westchester, New York, as part of Shen Yun Performing Arts’ 2010 tour. The New York-based company brings together award-winning talents in Chinese classical dance, orchestral music, vocalists and soloist musicians.
The non-profit Shen Yun company has set out to revive the essence of China’s 5,000 years of culture steeped in the belief that the inner beauty and purity, of each performer, is reflected through their art.
“I think that the vibrant colors, and just designs … each dance is just something different,” Mr. Baeriswil explained.
“It’s something you need to see.”
Mr. Baeriswil said that in regards to the performance of authentic Chinese culture, “I’ve not had the opportunity to see something like this before, and it’s a must see.”
The performers of Shen Yun Performing Arts are trained in classical Chinese dance, and in Chinese ethnic and folk dances. The movements of the art allow for a broad spectrum of expression and movement, ranging from gentle hand gestures to soaring backflips.
Bob Loughran, a retired technician from Verizon, said “I’ve never experienced anything like it.”
Mr. Loughran came to see the performance with his wife and sister-in-law. His wife, Laura Loughran, a fourth grade school teacher in New York City, said: “I can’t get over how beautiful it is. The costumes are beautiful, the dancing is great. The technique, how they dance in sync and everything. I’m really amazed by everything.”
Valerie Fiorino, Bob Loughran’s sister-in-law added, “It’s amazing. Just beautiful."
