WASHINGTON—Madeline Bordallo, member of the United States Congress representing the U.S. Territory of Guam, was transported by the “beautiful” Shen Yun Performing Arts show.
She was among the audience that graced the world-renowned Kennedy Center Opera House on Wednesday, Jan. 20, where artists portrayed China’s millennia-old divinely inspired cultural heritage.
The government official dubbed the performance “beautiful.”
“It was just like being in another world," she said. "The sets, and the dancers and their costuming—it was beautiful, they were so perfect.”
Shen Yuns' New York Company 2010 world tour is one of three visiting 79 cities worldwide, 33 in the U.S.
“I watched throughout the night … I’m very much into the arts myself, and I’ve very seldom seen a production as fine as this.”
A "delighted" Ms. Bordallo said she was moved by the Shen Yun soloists.
“Yes, the singing, the solos, the baritone—powerful voice, and I was reading the English translation. It was all very meaningful, and it touched me.”
As a result, she said she would leave the show with a feeling of hope “for better things” to come.
She was aware of Shen Yun not being allowed to perform in mainland China. The communist regime objects to two dances depicting the persecution of Falun Gong, a spiritual practice banned by the regime 10 years ago.
“I know there are human rights issues, and I think everybody should see it--it’s beautiful, very artistic.”
Ms. Bordallo hails from Guam, not too far from China, and has travelled there many times.
She said Shen Yun’s mission to reawaken ancient Chinese traditions through dance, music and song, and taking the show around the world was a “wonderful” endeavor.
“I’m pretty familiar with the cultures … so I understand, ” she said.
