SAN DIEGO—Mr. Landis, a retired journalist and playwright, said the Shen Yun Performing Arts presentation held at San Diego Civic Theatre on Dec. 28, was a wonderful connection to a beautiful culture.

Mr. Landis said, “it was magnificent, just magnificent … I’m very interested in theatrical events, and this was just awesome.

“The music, the dance, the choreography was just unbelievable … I was impressed by the choreography, and the size of the dancing group was unbelievable.”

New York-based Shen Yun is comprised of over 100 artists, including vocalists, musicians, and an orchestra.

Mr. Landis said the digitally enhanced 3-D backdrop scenes are “magnificent! Oh, I liked the dancing and I liked the scenic effects, and the pit orchestra was just magnificent.”

Thunderous drumming sequences, grand processions, and story-based dances of legends, folklore, and modern-day stories are some of Shen Yun’s trademarks.

Mrs. Landis, a therapist former dancer, she was amazed by the synchronicity of the dancers.

“I was so amazed by their ability to stay together and to flick their wrists at just the right times. The rhythm was just wonderful.”

She was particularly excited by the male dancers and was impressed by the techniques that crossed cultural boundaries.

“I’m much more in tune with the beauty of it,” she said.

The costumes “ were just magnificent. The materials … were just glorious.”

She thought that Handkerchiefs, a Northwest Chinese folk dance, was spectacular.
