PARIS—The Palais des Congrès de Paris staged the New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts on Sunday, April 25. Nicolas Laugero Lasser, director of the Espace Pierre Cardin Theater, was in the audience to experience China's millennia-old divinely-inspired culture come to life through classical Chinese dance and music.
As a director of a grand Parisian theater, Mr. Laugero Lasser said: “In producing many spectacles, one such as myself has seen dancers of great quality and exceptional singers.” And he was very impressed with the Shen Yun performers, saying, “I made a point of congratulating the whole group because it has been an excellent event. As good in its foundation as in its form, because they were exceptional dancers. In regards to form—truly artists of great talent.”
Mr. Laugero Lasser explained that one way to judge the ability of a performer is to see if they can successfully make a difficult movement look simple. He said: “Perfection is when something very difficult seems extremely easy when we see it, meaning that one has worked hours and hours, and as a result one says, Ha! But it's so beautiful, it's normal, it's natural, and it doesn’t appear as if the dancer is putting in any effort, and that's fantastic, that is a marvel.”
Mr. Laugero Lasser saw Shen Yun's aim to revive the ancient culture and traditions of China’s 5,000-year-old civilization that were suppressed or destroyed during the Cultural Revolution as a message of hope. He said: “From the very basis, a message of hope for people who love China—and I am, in fact, among them. I have been to China often—a hopeful message that shows the breadth and scope of this culture which is crushed today. The basis of it was completely exceptional, and so I was definitely fulfilled today, as the theme, this message, met such form.”
“So I say of these exceptional artists for prevailing thus, Bravo! Congratulations to everyone and best wishes for next year!”
The Espace Pierre Cardin was originally the Théâtre des Ambassadeurs, it was developed by fashion designer Pierre Cardin to be his own venue where he promoted new talents and established performers. It is now dedicated to all arts.
