LOS ANGELES—On Feb. 7, Shen Yun Performing Arts performed the second day of a 10-run show at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, The Music Center.
It was a resounding success, and the audience honored the performers with a curtain call.
Ms. Brynen, employed in public broadcasting and a dancer herself, took in the show and said, "The choreography was wonderful. They were together! We’re dancers, so we know when they’re in line," she continued. "The quality of dancing was spectacular."
Ms. Waltzer, a CPA, agreed with Ms. Brynen, "The dancing was excellent," she said.
Ms. Waltzer had heard about the persecution of Falun Gong, which is portrayed in some parts of the show. She observed that this is “a group of good people in China. I know about the persecution, and I had read about this, but this is the first time I’ve seen it visually."
Commenting on this aspect of the show, Ms. Brynen said, “I was very moved by that. And, I thought I want to go do some more research and find out more about it.” She was also affected by the spirituality of the performance.
“It just seems like it’s a time of our culture to look at spirituality in a different way. And, I was not expecting to have to find it here. I was expecting traditional culture and to find this depth was very enlightening, and it piqued my curiosity."
Both Ms. Waltzer and Ms. Brynen’s husbands were fascinated by the costumes. “The costumes are wonderful," Mr. Waltzer said.
Mr. Brynen added that the use of the costumes became part of the dance: “The costume was an extension of the dancer in a very natural way, and it didn’t feel fabricated. I really enjoyed the dancing and the costumes, and the whole ambiance. The totality of it was just lovely."
His wife added: "I thought the show was fabulous. There was a lot of dramatics in the dancing. I do a lot of dancing myself, and I found the choreographer to be very inventive. And, I loved the representation of the culture through the choreography."
"I was mesmerized and the whole performance was just spectacular," concluded Ms. Brynen.
