HOUSTON—Shen Yun Performing Arts gave its third and final performance in 2009 in Jones Hall on Wednesday, Dec. 23.
Ms. Brewer, a retired music teacher and a dancer for over 30 years, was captivated by the techniques demonstrated by the Shen Yun dancers and the various colorful costumes.
“Oh, it's fabulous! For them to do the … dance, the … turns, all of them together—in my troupe we have a hard time doing it with seven of us, and I'm just in awe that they’re all together,” she said.
“Their perfection is magnificent. And the costumes are just beautiful! I can't tell you which I enjoyed more … it's very beautiful.”
After seeing the show advertised and from the pictures, the colorful costumes, and the breathtaking backdrops, Ms. Brewer knew this show was a must see.
“It's gorgeous, just beautiful, very entertaining, and I can tell that they’ve done a lot of practicing, and I can appreciate the amount of time that they put into this performance.”
Ms. Brewer also admired the combination of Eastern instruments with Western classical instruments in the Shen Yun orchestra, saying that it blends in very well.
As a music teacher, Ms. Brewer used to bring her children to Jones Hall to see various performances, including opera and ballet, as she believes music and the arts are very important to the overall education of children.
“It’s a means of relaxation and a means of forgetting the world's troubles and your own personal troubles and just enjoy it,” she said.
She also mentioned that the show would help children of Chinese descent get in touch with their heritage.
“I think it'll bring more of an awareness of the [traditional] Chinese culture and appreciation of their [traditional] culture and their [traditional] dances, and it's said that music is the universal language and so is dance. This speaks for itself.”
Shen Yun's next performance will be in San Diego where they will present seven shows between Dec. 26-31. For more information, please visit shenyunperformingarts.org/sandiego
