ATLANTA—City Councilman Clarence “CT” Martin proclaimed August 21, 2010, as “Shen Yun Performing Arts Day” to welcome the New York-based Chinese classical dance and music company.
Mr. Martin delivered the declaration at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts following the opening matinee at a VIP reception.
The councilman, who was standing in for Council President Ceasar Mitchell, said he was glad to be given the privilege of honoring Shen Yun with the award.
“I'm excited about being here and having an opportunity to talk about [these] very talented dancers,” Mr. Martin said. “This whole concept of coordination—light, sound, music and dance—just brings us all together, in a different kind of way.”
The Shen Yun company has a mission to reawaken ancient China’s divinely inspired cultural heritage brought from 5,000 years of history into the 21st century and portrayed in story-based dance and song.
Mr. Martin described the performance as being “very spiritual, very energetic, very calm, very meditative,” a performance he "truly” enjoyed, he said.
“All we need to do was connect through the arts and through the culture. We will go a long way to bringing about beauty that is there, as we see in culture, see in materials, choreography and all other kind of production activities to make for a happy evening … an educational evening for people to have an interest and explore in our minds, other thoughts—and venture into other worlds and other cultures.”
