NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.—Shen Yun Performing Arts held a special performance at New Jersey’s State Theatre in New Brunswick on Friday night, displaying the magnificence of thousands of years of Chinese culture to an enthusiastic audience.
Lucia Aliberti, dubbed the “Queen of Bel Canto” and renowned throughout the world for her vocal talent, was in attendance and immediately noted the “strong energy” given off from Shen Yun’s dancers. Ms. Aliberti has performed in front of delegates from UNESCO and UNICEF, Pope John Paul II, Prince Charles of England, and many others.
The dancers displayed perfection in each of their movements, down to each finger and arm movement, said Ms. Aliberti. She also noted the unity found in the overall choreography, the bright and colorful costumes, and the beautiful backdrop images in each piece. “It’s unbelievable,” she said.
Shen Yun’s dancers train rigorously throughout the year to hone their craft, classical Chinese dance, which, according to the company’s website, embodies “traditional aesthetic principles with its unique dance movements, rhythms, and inner meaning.”
The acts within each Shen Yun performance display the history of China before the current communist regime all but destroyed its traditional culture, reads the company’s website.
These revived cultural elements were evident to Ms. Aliberti, who said one can “see what happened” in China’s history via the performance.
As a world-famous singer who, according to her website, is considered “one of the most complete artists of her generation,” Ms. Aliberti took particular interest in the singing solos performed on Friday night.
“Every singer … gave big emotion,” she said, noting that they produced “big energy that came from the stage,” leaving the audience stunned and “very silent.” She complimented each singer’s voice, adding that “the songs were very good.”
Ms. Aliberti was also impressed by Shen Yun’s orchestra, which uniquely blends together Chinese and Western music. The music was “very strong” and “very good,” she said. With reporting by Pamela Tsai.
