The first New Tang Dynasty Television (NTD) Chinese International Piano Competition will draw hopeful Chinese Piano talents from all over the world to New York this weekend.

Starting Friday, Oct. 31, the event will offer three days of inspiration for young Chinese musicians, and a firestorm of great piano classics for the listeners. The semifinals and the final round of the competition will be open to the public on Saturday, Nov. 1, through Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Town Hall in New York’s Midtown.

As with every event of NTD’s “Nine Competition” series intended to revive traditional arts, the mission in hosting the piano competition is to provide a platform for young Chinese from all over the world, and foster exchange between the classical Chinese and Western arts.

The presiding judges will be searching for outstanding performances of pure authenticity, goodness, and beauty. The competition promises to be a thrilling experience as these future concert pianists will vie for the Gold award. Preliminary rounds in Taiwan were already held in August, and a number of Taiwanese competitors will proceed directly to the semifinal round.

A Gold award (US$10,000), Silver award (US$3,000), and Bronze award (US$1,000) will be given to the best piano talents, and a number of outstanding performance honorable mention awards will recognize excellent interpretations.

NTD is expecting 70 contestants and a juryof international piano experts, consisting of Eastern and Western personalities, to elect the winners. Similar to the violin competition NTD hosted in July, the focus is on the performance of essential composers and pieces of the classical piano repertoire.

In the preliminaries, the pianists will start with Mozart sonatas, and will play Beethoven sonatas for the semis. The final on Sunday will feature the contestants’ renditions of Chopin and Bach.

To make the event even more splendid and attractive for lovers of classical music, a piano recital with all finalists will be the highlight of Sunday evening at the Town Hall, in which the young talents will showcase their strongest piece performed in the competition. Thereafter, the award ceremony will resolve the weekend’s mounting tension as a winner is declared.

Semifinal tickets on Saturday cost $20, $10 for seniors and students. Tickets to the finals on Sunday cost $25, $15 for seniors and students. To purchase tickets, call 877-NTD-SHOW or visit http://ticket.ntdtv.com/competitions/performance.php
