LODZ, Poland—A musical family traveled 140 kilometers from Warsaw to see Shen Yun Performing Arts. Top business analyst Mr. Preus and his wife brought their young daughters to the Grand Theatre. The girls wore Chinese dresses.
Mr. Preus found the performance "very moving, but for me the most emotional aspect of the performance was the attempt to show a problem that´s known all over the world—the Chinese communist regime. This was conveyed throughout the performance, sometimes subtly, and sometimes with great power. I think this was a fantastic opportunity to show the world what really goes on there and how a nation that has thousands of years of culture at this moment has to suffer needlessly."
Two dances in the 2009 show are courageous modern stories of people resisting persecution by the communist regime. One is Heaven Awaits Us Despite Persecution. Another is Dignity and Compassion.
Mr. Preus was not surprised the artists explored such current themes. He said "since these are dancers of Chinese origin but live in the United States, I was expecting that they were going to attempt to show the problem … since the show travels all over the world."
At that moment, his elder daughter Klaudia said, "It was fantastic! Very much so." The ten year old plays both the piano and the violin. She said she found the playing of those instruments by the orchestra members to be "very beautiful."
Younger sister Diana said, "I play the flute. It was super. They played beautifully, they sang beautifully." Their mother said "of course" she would recommend the show to others.
Mr. Preus said the family all have musical knowledge. He said, "I liked it very much. It was incredible! We liked it even more than we had expected. It was fantastic!" Ms. Preus said, "I also share this opinion."
Ms. Preus could not chose which of the components, dance or music, pleased her most. She said, "To be honest, it was everything. Because our daughters go to music school. We are a very musical family with formal musical training. So we paid attention to the instruments, to the music and to the dancing."
They plan to see the company again next year. They had chosen to get tickets just based on seeing the posters on the street.
