A dog ate 16 rocks weighing nearly 2 pounds will survive the ordeal, said doctors.
The dog--a 7-year-old Golden Retriever named Gordon--had an emergency at BluePearl Veterinary Hospital in Eden Prairie, Minn., on Wednesday, reported The Associated Press
Dr. Jeff Yu, who performed the surgery, told AP that when dogs eat rocks, they stop after eating only one or two.
“You don’t see too many dogs that eat this many rocks usually,” Yu said, according to the Toronto Sun. “Most dogs will stop after one or two, but Gordon certainly had quite the hankering for some rocks.”
Yu said Gordon will make a full recovery, and it spent Wednesday and of Thursday recovering, reported Today.com.
“Gordon is doing great and is now back at home with his family,’’ BluePearl spokesman James Judge told the website. “I’m not entirely sure, but I believe his owners have hidden all of the other rocks in the yard to prevent this from happening again.”
The owners, who were anonymous, told Today that they noticed the dog’s stomach looked bigger than normal. When they noticed the dog passed a rock, the family took him to the vet.
“We get some wild cases, but just the sheer amount is what made this one different,’’ Judge added. “It’s not unusual to see dogs take something down. I talked to his owners, and they said I would have to ask Gordon why he would eat that when there’s plenty of great food served every day.”
