Geneva—It’s autumn in Geneva and the weather is very comfortable. Divine Performing Arts (DPA) new production recently had its world premiere in this scenic city. Offering five shows in early October, DPA’s Spectacular drew crowds of celebrities from various fields.
Drawing from over 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture, DPA presented performances of consummate beauty and innate goodness deeply touching the heart of every audience member.
Especially at the final performance on October 5, responses from theatre goers were warmer then ever. When Tenor Hong Ming sang the final note, the entire theatre burst into thunderous applause. After the curtain fell, the audience continued applauding and the performers responded to their gratitude with a total of three curtain calls.
“I can tell what true dance is—I witnessed it here,” exclaimed renowned dancer, Ms. Maria Brissonskaja after seeing the Spectacular on October 3.
Ms. Brissonskaja could easily be said to be an authority on dance. In addition to several highlights of her distinguished career, she has even performed with Russia’s King of Ballet, Nureyev, arguably the greatest ballet dancer of the 20th century.
“The movements of the artists in Divine Performing Arts demonstrated grace—their arms, hands, even the heads all demonstrated grace,” observed Ms. Brissonskaja. “Their leaps were so light; this quality is not often seen in Europe.”
“I felt very light and comfortable when I watched this performance,” she said. “The colors were beautiful, full of energy and absolutely amazing. The drum performances were synchronized seamlessly and highly professional. I think if they performed Swan Lake, we would actually see flying swans.”
Mr. Robert-Hisland Hiestand, director of the Geneva Higher Institute of Music was very excited and impressed after watching the show. “Even though I have been studying music for many years, after seeing this show, I felt like a newborn infant, as I have just experienced a new realm of music,” exclaimed Hiestand. “‘Exceptional’ is the only word I could use to describe it.”
“I was particularly moved by the segment called 'Chopstick Zest.' I have been involved in the research and protection of Mongolian music for years, and the music and rhythm of this piece is so dear to my heart,” said Hiestand.
“All of them are graceful and lovely, absolutely fantastic and super,” said Hiestand, referring to the overall effect of the performance including music, dance and costumes. “I really appreciate Divine Performing Arts for bringing such beautiful artistic performance to us. We really need this kind of art these days. I can say that after many years of waiting, I finally get to hear the real music.”
Famous Swiss artist Mr. Jean-Michel Bouchardy is known for his paintings and sculpture, murals and stained glass paints. You can find his work in Geneva’s Saint George Church which showcases some of his colorful glass paints. He attended the Spectacular with his wife, Huguette Bouchardy, who is also a famous painter.
“My whole life is in art. From the point of view of art, I can only use the word 'perfect' to describe this show. Spectacular!” proclaimed Mr. Bouchardy.
“I am a painter and you will frequently see my name in professional art magazines,” said Bouchardy. “Painters have a unique understanding of color. From my perspective, the costumes, music, backdrop, choreography and use of color in this performance are perfect. At the same time, these elements, combined with the content and the meaning behind the performance are illustrated in perfect harmony. I enjoyed it very much.”
“This performance is so exciting,” added Mrs. Bouchardy. “It is totally different from the other performances we have seen. It’s perfect in both content and form. It has a very high level of artistry.”
