Disneyland employees who portray characters or participate in parades and other attractions announced Feb. 13 their plan to unionize.

Known as “Magic United,” cast members employed in Anaheim’s Disneyland Resort’s Characters and Parades department have begun circulating union authorization cards among 1,700 employees. Upon a majority of cards being signed, the group will pursue recognition from Disney Resort Entertainment or conduct an election among its members after filing for authorization with the National Labor Relations Board.

“Disneyland is a very special place where cast members create magic that attracts millions of guests every year,“ union President Kate Shindle said. ”Disney workers are openly and powerfully invested in and loyal to the Walt Disney Company and its values, so it’s reasonable for them to expect ‘the happiest place on earth' to pay them fairly and prioritize their health and safety.”

The union, known as the Actors’ Equity Association, represents professional actors and stage managers on Broadway, in live theaters across the country, and at Disney World in Orlando.

The union’s statement for unionization underscores several concerns, including the need for safe and hygienic workplace conditions, equitable compensation, and improved transparency in scheduling and rehiring processes, according to Deadline’s report.

The Disneyland employees leading the movement stated that they opted for the Equity because “we’ve witnessed their effective collaboration with Disney in Florida, on Broadway, and during touring productions.”

A Disneyland official told Deadline that they respect the process.

“We believe that our Cast Members deserve access to all pertinent information and the opportunity for a confidential vote that respects their individual decisions,” the statement said.
