Customs officers in Shenzhen caught a Japanese man from Hong Kong attempting to smuggle thousands of diamonds in his underpants, after they noticed he was walking strangely.

A search revealed that the man had over 7,000 tiny diamonds on his person, hidden inside a plastic bag, as well as 10 pieces of jewelry weighing about 5 ounces.

The officers spent several hours last Thursday counting the booty, which included 7,443 diamonds, the Guangzhou Daily reported. The article did not say how much the diamonds were likely worth, though it could have been millions of dollars.

The diamonds had a total weight of 72.05 carats. The case has been referred to the anti-smuggling department.

Netizens mostly commented on the man’s stupidity, with one saying, “He should have put the diamonds on a highly decorated bag or hat, and walked through customs with pride.”
