There is no reason why fuller-figured women should hide behind baggy, boring clothes. More and more designers are creating beautiful ladies plus size clothing and it’s time to start experimenting and having fun with fashion.

Here are a few Dos and Don’ts to help you on your way to building a fabulous wardrobe:

#1: Do invest in good undergarments

A well-fitting bra is your best friend. It can alleviate back pain, improve your posture, make your clothes fit better and make you look longer and leaner. A high-quality bra may be expensive, but it’s worth every penny.

#2: Don’t wear baggy clothes

Oversized clothing will just make you look bigger than you actually are. You might also run the risk of looking sloppy and uncomfortable in your own skin. Wearing all black isn’t slimming unless the pieces fit well.

#3: Do Find a Good Tailor

Tailors can help transform your clothing from just okay to something that looks like it was made just for you. They can move buttons, shorten hems and take in the waist of a jacket to give you a better silhouette. When trying on clothing, fit the largest part of your body, and then have someone take in the rest so it fits you perfectly.

#4: Don’t Be Afraid of Trends

Horizontal stripes and skinny jeans aren’t your enemies. The trick to wearing trends is finding the ones that work for your body type. Pay attention to fit and proportion and you can rock the latest styles with the best of them.

#5: Do Have Fun with Accessories

Think of building you wardrobe like building a house: undergarments are the foundation and frame; clothes are the shingles, bricks and windows; and accessories and shoes are the interior decor. Meaning, your outfit isn’t complete without a few special extras or pop of color. They’re also a great way to play with trends without buying a whole new outfit. And who doesn’t love the way they strut in a pair of gorgeous shoes?

#6: Don’t Pass By the Other Stores in the Mall

Mainstream retailers are realizing women come in all shapes and sizes. Stores like Old Navy, Ann Taylor, and even H+M have styles and sizes that will work with, not against, your body. Take some time and grab stuff you like and try it on. What you find might surprise you.

#7: Do Get Some Pretty Lingerie

Every woman should feel sexy, no matter her size. A silky nightgown or embroidered kimono robe will keep you looking stylish even if you don’t leave the house. Your partner will appreciate a bit of lace and frills instead of an oversized nightshirt. Go ahead and wear a pretty camisole under your suit jacket. It will be a little secret between you and your mirror that will give you a Mona Lisa smile all day.

#8: Don’t Forget about Hair and Makeup

Start your outfit from the top down and find a hairstyle that plays up your best features. Play with texture, color and length and highlight sparkling eyes, sculpted cheekbones or creamy skin. Update your makeup, too. Try a new shade of eyeliner or a shimmery lip gloss and feel like a new woman.

The number on your clothing label doesn’t matter. What does matter is how you feel when you put your clothes on. The right clothes will give you the confidence to take on the world.
